Court keeps Massachusetts rent initiative off 2026 ballot

In Cella v. Attorney General (SJC-13893), the Supreme Judicial Court ruled on June 23, 2026 that the initiative petition to limit rent increases contained excluded matters in violation of art. 48, and barred it from the 2026 statewide ballot. Massachusetts law still prohibits local rent control, so Boston has no cap.
